GRC Aboriginal Education Student Workshop - Monday 14 November 2022
Do you know your mob? Who are they? Where do they live? What’s the difference between Welcome to and Acknowledgement of Country? These were the opening questions for the first yarning circle of the day at GRC Peakhurst Campus.
The focus of the day was to create a unique and meaningful personalised Acknowledgement of Country. Aunty Livi led a workshop exploring what Country means, why and how Country is central to culture and self-identity, as well as explaining the difference between Welcome to and Acknowledgement of Country.
The question ‘what can you do with a leaf and a rock?’ was posed in another yarning circle. Aunty Calita shared her knowledge of the creation story and artefacts –immersing students in learning what the artefacts were made from and how they were used. As students listened, they could hold and feel the artefacts, opening their hearts and minds to further understand Country.
As a group, the students collectively developed a final draft of their Acknowledgement of Country. Meeting and learning from Aunty Calita and Aunty Livi was appreciated by the students and staff present.
Thank you to Calita Murray and Olivia Patten (R/Aboriginal Community Liaison Officers, Learning & Wellbeing) for sharing their knowledge and keeping Aboriginal culture alive.
