QELi Middle Leadership Program

“Research shows that middle leaders … play a crucial role in leading excellence in teaching practice and student outcomes. They are the school leaders who have a direct impact in classrooms and their influence extends across classrooms, teaching teams and schools”

NSW Department of Education School Leadership Institute

Georges River College is committed to the development of our aspiring and middle leaders. To this end we have negotiated with the Queensland Educational Leadership Institute (QELi) to provide a leadership development program for GRC staff. The program provides a closer exploration of the knowledge, skills, and confidence to lead and develop others for effective leadership of school communities.

The Leadership for Middle Leaders program is about developing highly effective middle leaders to close the gap in achievement and reduce variation in schools. The program draws on the latest evidence about effective leadership in schools. Throughout the program, learning is consolidated through one-to-one coaching, and highly professional and collegiate groups.

This program is designed for aspiring and middle leaders who:

  • actively engage in learning and are willing to commit to a challenging program
  • are driven by the moral purpose to improve the quality of teaching and therefore the quality of student learning in their schools
  • have demonstrated expertise in teaching and learning
  • have demonstrated a positive impact on teacher and student learning.
  • can show how the program will benefit their leadership development

Participants Feedback:

"I believe that this course should be done again as I have truly found it invaluable in my first year in a leadership role. It has given me the tools I need to implement new initiatives in science and the ability to manage a team of varying abilities and skills. It has also given me ways of seeing a staff members true value and how to get the best of my faculty."

"Working with QELI has helped me to reflect on my leadership style, obviously thinking about what I can do better, but also helping me to see what I do well. In the busyness of school life we don't often have the time or space to discuss and consider what makes a good leader, the program has allowed me that chance, it has been powerful and thought provoking."

"QELI's leadership program has been excellent, it has highlighted the importance of trust with your staff and pitfalls that micromanaging can bring that undermines that trust.  The 1:1 session with a mentor principal has been a real goldmine of collegial workshopping of ideas.  Thank you for the opportunity, it has been, and continues to be, a valuable experience."

"The QELI Middle Leaders Course has been fundamental in equipping me to fulfil the role of middle leadership and beyond, substantially.

Initially, prior to undertaking this course I felt lacking and unsure of my ability to enact meaningful change but every facet of the course thus far has supported me to grow in confidence to lead. Our desired outcome collectively within the Middle Leaders Course is to better the outcome of our students, to ensure that our college provides an environment for our students to thrive. Often, however, we become inundated at the classroom level for we are only person.

The course and each modules lay the foundation for effective leadership, informed by critical readings that underpin each section’s focus. The pre-learning activities and reflection on my current reality as a leader has meant that I am able to track my progress and efficacy as a positive influence within my faculty, at my school and with the view to contribute more college wide.

This course and our Instructor Carolyn inspires us to interrogate how we can go about growing effective teaching, learning and leadership capacity amongst our colleagues.  I feel my communication skills have been enhanced, as well as navigating difficult conversations and developing rapport and trust with my fellow educators."
