HSIE and Science Professional Learning Day

HSIE and Science Professional Learning Day - 24 May 2021

Teaching staff in the Science and HSIE KLAs from across the four campuses were invited to participate in the day’s professional learning, facilitated by PDHPE KLA Coordinator, Jason Rea and College Principal, Leanne Larcombe.

The facilitators created a safe and trusting environment where staff felt comfortable to experiment, take initiative and challenge their own habits and ways of thinking. HSIE and Science staff collaborated in cross campus and cross KLA groups to trial embedding the explicit teaching of numeracy into their teaching programs with a particular focus on number talks and number routines. This professional learning community was also provided with resources for future reference.

Learning Objectives:

  • Develop and refine understanding of numeracy and what it means to be numerate.
  • Explore a process to identify numeracy demands and opportunities in all NSW syllabuses.
  • Develop an understanding of Number Talks and Number Routines.
  • Design learning activities that incorporate a Number Talk. Embed Number Talks into current and future programs. Build a deeper understanding of the power of dialogic talk in the classroom.
  • Explore the talk moves protocol.
  • Consider ways to implement talk moves into all classrooms.
